MySpace Web 2.0

Hello ... Sorry for the late post, I was on a school field trip to Beaver Hollow (amazing & relaxing :) I attempted to make a MySpace page as my Web 2.o assignment. I've had a facebook account for awhile now and I figured MySpace would be similar and simple. I've always had difficulties with technology, and I think these Web assignments should be incorporated into every grad class because it is forcing me to teach myself without relying on anyone to set it up for me. Anyway, I was assuming that MySpace would be relatively simple for me to set up because of my history with facebook, but I was completely wrong. I've actually only been able to create a simple page, with limited information, and I have yet to befriend a single person (other than "Tom" who is the default friend, I've never met, from California). As I've been reflecting on my limited technological abilities, I'm reminded of the readings. According to Barlow, I am technically considered an 'insider' when it comes to cyberspace, simply because of my age. People over the age of 35 are considered 'newcomers' because the internet is a learned experience. I'm only 23, but I still clearly remember living in a world prior to the internet, cell phones, laptops, digital cameras, and of cource MySpace. I learned to use the internet, but not as rapidly as most my age. During college, when facebook exploded, I had an authentic purpose and desire to understand and be connected to cyberspace. Now, I typically use the internet for email and research, and little for entertainment purposes. The internet is truly what you make of it. It will meet your needs, even as they change. It reminds me of the Dave Chappell skit on the internet. If you don't know what I'm talking about you need to watch this 5 min. clip. It's hysterical, a good way to procrastinate, and relevant to what we've been talking about. http://youtube.com/watch?v=W5XFWYlACNs The Web 2.0 assignments create a somewhat authentic purpose for us to explore and expand our understanding of the internet and an alternative to traditional literacy experiences. In the future I will be able to offer new literacies, as an option for students to learn and teach. *Here's the link to my myspace page... it's under construction, so please be patient as I explore new literacies (http://home.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user)

Thanks for the giving the Chappelle link. I enjoyed it and thanks to you I will now be unprepared for my class today because, like Chappelle, I was distracted by other things on the internet. Only kidding (haha). It was good clip though! Like you, I typically use the internet for email and research, and little for entertainment purposes. I liked your comment of "The internet is truly what you make of it. It will meet your needs, even as they change." I can't agree with you enough! It's amazing how the internet can have so many abilities to enhance our knowledge of practically anything. When someone tells me about something on the internet that has been helpful or useful to them, I normally to pay much attention because I can't relate to exploring the internet in depth. However, when we he our first web 2.0 assignment presentations, I was amazed at the different we application people has explored. Due to the web 2.0 assignments I am more interested than ever to explore different websites, especially as a tool for teaching.
