Its about the movement to create cross-platform compatibility (in google's case - linking with myspace and others) and Facebook's attempt to create a platform that provides easy access to creating new apps. The fundamental idea behind all of these is that all aspects of the net should be able to work together (especially googles approach to their new platform).
